A Night in Vice City: Rockstar's real-world Miami takeover

On November 18, the night before launch, the Miami Heat become the Vice City Heat for one game. It is the loudest part of a wider campaign that has been quietly turning the real Miami into Vice City.

The talking points

  1. 01The Heat host the Milwaukee Bucks at Kaseya Center on November 18 as "A Night in Vice City".
  2. 02The team will play on a special Vice City court in reimagined uniforms, with a merchandise line on sale.
  3. 03Reports say Burger Shot and Cluckin' Bell outlets have opened inside the arena.
  4. 04Outlets also report a large Vice City billboard and other Miami activations.

Rockstar's marketing for Grand Theft Auto VI has been quieter than the game's scale might suggest, so the last weeks have felt different. The campaign has moved off the screen and into the real city that inspired Vice City.

The centrepiece is the Miami Heat. According to ESPN and the team's own site, the Heat will present "A Night in Vice City" on November 18, hosting the Milwaukee Bucks at Kaseya Center, with a 7:00 PM ET tip-off on ESPN, WPLG Local 10 and FM 104.3 WQAM. The team will play on a special Vice City hardwood and wear reimagined uniforms, and a Vice City apparel line is already on sale through the Heat's store. Push Square and GamesRadar both frame it as the team being rebranded as Vice City for the night.

It extends to the building itself. GamesRadar reports that the fictional fast-food brands Burger Shot and Cluckin' Bell have opened in the arena, and that the Vice City logo has been placed on the roof. VGC has described Rockstar as quietly transforming the real Miami into Vice City, and GamesRadar reports a large billboard that has gone up despite objections from local police. GameSpot has separately noted real-world versions of the games' food brands on sale. We have not independently verified each activation, so details such as pricing and exact locations are best checked with the sources.

Why does this matter? Grand Theft Auto has always satirised a specific place, and Vice City is the series' loving send-up of Miami. Turning the real city into a stage for the game is a statement of confidence in the date: sports-team partnerships are scheduled months ahead, and a game-night tied to November 18 is not something a studio books for a launch it expects to move. It sits alongside pre-orders, a preload date and an ESRB rating as another sign that November 19 is firm.

It also tells us about the tone. Rockstar's trailers present Leonida as sunny, loud and slightly unhinged, and the partnership leans into that. If you are in Miami, the Heat game is the clearest tie-in; if not, the merch and broadcast will do the job.
