GTA VI preload guide: November 12, download codes and file size

Preloading starts November 12, a week before launch. Boxed copies are a download code with no disc, and Rockstar has not published a file size, so every number you see is a guess.

The talking points

  1. 01Digital buyers can preload from November 12; the game unlocks on November 19.
  2. 02Physical copies contain a code for the digital download. Rockstar's notes say no disc is included.
  3. 03Boxed copies go on sale November 12, but the code does not unlock play until launch.
  4. 04No official install size exists; estimates from 150GB to 300GB and beyond are speculation.

With launch under four weeks away, the practical question for most players is simple: what do I need to do before November 19? The answer has two parts that Rockstar has confirmed and one that it has not.

The first confirmed part is the preload. Digital pre-orders can begin downloading on November 12, a week before the game unlocks, so that players can start on launch day without waiting on a download. For a game of this scale, that week is not a nicety. Launch-day network congestion on the PlayStation Network and Xbox services is a familiar problem, and preloading is the cleanest way to sidestep it.

The second confirmed part is the physical edition, which is not what the name suggests. Rockstar's pre-order notes state that physical copies contain a code redeemable for the digital download and that no disc is included in the box. Push Square, Pure Xbox and VGC all reported this in June, and the Hollywood Reporter, via GameSpot, said there are no plans to print discs at launch or in the months after. Boxed copies go on sale November 12, and the code can be redeemed to preload from that date, but it does not unlock the game until November 19. For collectors this is a sore point; for everyone else it means the box is functionally a gift card with packaging, and a stable internet connection is required either way.

The part nobody can answer is how much storage to clear. Rockstar has not published an installation size. Fan estimates range from about 150GB to 300GB, and some figures circulating go far higher, but none come from a reliable source. TweakTown has reported a development build of over 200GB, and a development build is not a retail package: it carries debug data and uncompressed assets that never ship. Treat all of these as guesses. If you are on a small console drive, the safest preparation is to free up generous space now and check the store listing as launch approaches, since the size usually appears on the platform store page once the game is ready for preload.

A final safety note. Interest this high attracts scams. Files claiming to be GTA VI builds or early downloads are not real, and installing them risks malware. The only legitimate ways to get the game are the PlayStation Store, the Xbox store and the Rockstar Store codes sold at retail. Anything else is not worth the risk.
