GTA VI pre-orders: what the $630 million estimate does and doesn't mean

Sensor Tower estimates about $630 million from roughly 6.45 million digital pre-orders. It is a striking number, but it is an estimate with an unclear scope, and the real test comes at launch.

The talking points

  1. 01Sensor Tower puts digital pre-orders at about 6.45 million and $630 million, per TweakTown and Insider Gaming.
  2. 02The split reported is about 4.8 million on PlayStation and 1.66 million on Xbox.
  3. 03An October 13 figure was about 6 million pre-orders and $594 million.
  4. 04Physical sales are excluded, and outlets disagree on whether the totals are US-only or global.
  5. 05Take-Two has not confirmed any pre-order figure.

Few numbers have travelled faster this month than the claim that Grand Theft Auto VI has already earned more than half a billion dollars before anyone has played it. The figure comes from the analytics firm Sensor Tower, and reading it correctly matters more than repeating it.

As reported by TweakTown and Insider Gaming, Sensor Tower's latest estimate is about $630 million from roughly 6.45 million digital pre-orders, with PlayStation 5 accounting for around 4.8 million copies and $468 million and Xbox for about 1.66 million copies and $162 million. A week earlier, on October 13, the same tracker was reported at about 6 million pre-orders and $594 million. Growth of several hundred thousand copies in about a week suggests demand is still building rather than stalling, which fits with preloading opening on November 12.

Three caveats keep the number honest. First, it is an estimate built from store data, not a sales report; Sensor Tower is a third party and the figures are not confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two. Second, it excludes physical copies, so the true total is higher by an unknown amount. Third, the scope is murky. Some outlets, such as Khel Now, describe the 6.45 million as US figures, others describe it as global, and Gurugamer cites a US-only set of 6.08 million and about $594 million. Anyone using the number should say which they mean, and the honest answer is that coverage disagrees.

It is also worth putting the number in context rather than treating it as a record. Pre-orders measure intent, not launch-week sales, and a studio like Rockstar can rely on strong word of mouth after release. The more reliable guide to the commercial picture is Take-Two itself: in August the company reiterated fiscal 2027 net bookings guidance of $8.0 to $8.2 billion, tied to the November 19 launch, according to VGC. Take-Two's next earnings report is expected on November 10, nine days before launch, and that is the place to look for official commentary.

The takeaway is that demand looks enormous and the date looks firm, but a trading firm's estimate is not a sales announcement. For the ongoing argument over price and editions, which presumably affects how many of these pre-orders are Standard versus Ultimate, see our debate post on the $99.99 tier.
