GTA VI is rated Mature 17+: what the ratings actually say

The ESRB has rated Grand Theft Auto VI M for Mature 17+, with seven content descriptors and an in-game purchases notice. Here is what the listing confirms, what the regional boards added, and what it does not tell us.

The talking points

  1. 01The ESRB rates GTA VI M (Mature 17+) on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
  2. 02Descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol.
  3. 03The listing carries an In-Game Purchases interactive element.
  4. 04A detailed PEGI 18 summary appeared in early October and was removed within a day; its details are press-reported, not something Rockstar published.
  5. 05No ratings board has told us anything about story, length or online features.

Age ratings rarely make headlines, but the week Grand Theft Auto VI's rating appeared was one of the busiest of the build-up to launch. The ESRB's public listing for the game shows an M for Mature 17+ rating covering PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. That is the same tier every mainline Grand Theft Auto has held for years, so the rating itself is no surprise. The descriptors underneath it are where the interesting detail sits.

The ESRB lists seven content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. It also lists In-Game Purchases as an interactive element. That last item is worth reading carefully. The ESRB applies it to a wide range of paid extras, not just random loot, so it confirms that some form of paid content exists but says nothing about what it is or how aggressive it will be. Anyone reading it as proof of a specific monetisation model is going further than the evidence allows.

Regional boards added colour. Press coverage from Push Square and VGC reported that Europe's PEGI published an 18 rating with an unusually specific summary, describing realistic gore, frequent and prominent drug use, nudity and intercourse, and optional private dances in nightclubs. VGC also reported that the PEGI entry was taken down shortly after it went up, and no official explanation was given. Australian and New Zealand listings, according to GamesRadar, name sex scenes explicitly, which the outlet read as a step up in wording from Grand Theft Auto V's older classification. Because the older game was rated in 2013, some of that difference may simply be newer, more detailed rating language rather than a real change in content.

It is sensible to hold these descriptions at arm's length. A ratings summary describes what a reviewer was told a game can contain; it is not a design document, and a removed listing is not a confirmed one. Nothing in any of the rating material tells us how often these things happen, whether they are optional, or how they fit the story. Our guide to the confirmed facts on this site deliberately leaves the PEGI wording out for that reason, and we only treat the ESRB listing as firm.

What the ratings do give us is a useful reality check on tone. Rockstar's trailers have leaned on sun, music and romance, and the ratings are a reminder that the finished game is aimed squarely at adults. For parents, the practical takeaway is straightforward: this is a 17+ title, the consoles' parental controls apply, and the in-game purchases notice is a prompt to check spending limits before a younger family member gets near a store page.
