Will GTA VI run at 60fps? What the tech analysts found
Digital Foundry's analysis of An Extended Look points to a roughly native 1440p, 30fps presentation on base PS5, and the PS5 Pro's CPU limits any easy 60fps fix. None of it is an official target.
The talking points
- 01Digital Foundry's reading of the footage: about native 1440p on base PS5, upscaled to 4K, at a mostly steady 30fps.
- 02The analysts blame CPU load from open-world simulation, and note the PS5 Pro's CPU is only about 7% faster.
- 03Rockstar has published no official resolution or frame-rate targets.
- 04Footage released so far was captured on PS5, so Xbox performance is untested publicly.
Resolution and frame rate are the technical questions that dominate the final weeks before any big console launch, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. The material so far comes from analysts reading Rockstar's own footage, not from Rockstar. That is a useful distinction to keep in mind throughout.
According to press coverage of Digital Foundry's work, including GamesRadar, Push Square and GameSpot, the Extended Look footage appears to run at a native 2560x1440 on a base PS5 and is then upscaled to 4K. Because of how Rockstar uploaded the video, a full frame-rate analysis was not possible, but the team saw a mostly stable, well-paced 30fps with only rare single-frame drops. They also described a fairly straightforward spatial upscale, with some softness, visible aliasing and shimmer on fine detail, and noisy ray-traced reflections in places.
The reasoning behind 30fps is the more interesting part. Analysts argue that the limiting factor is not the GPU but the CPU: Grand Theft Auto's trademark crowd, traffic and physics simulation is expensive, and the PS5 Pro's processor offers only around a 7% improvement over the base console. A bigger GPU can raise resolution or add ray tracing, but it cannot simply double the frame rate if the CPU is the bottleneck. GamesRadar's report summarises the consensus of the tech analysts it spoke to as 60fps being unlikely on console.
Be careful about what this does and does not establish. These are inferences from marketing footage, and footage in a trailer can be captured under conditions that differ from final retail builds. Some outlets also report a claim that Rockstar itself said the game would run at 30fps; we could not trace that to a primary Rockstar source, so we do not treat it as confirmed. Rockstar has not published resolution or frame-rate targets for any console, and since the released footage was captured on PS5, there is no public evidence about how the Xbox Series X and Series S versions will run.
The sensible expectation, then, is a cinematic 30fps presentation at launch, with any higher-frame-rate mode a bonus rather than a promise. Rockstar's own history is relevant: Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped on console without a 60fps option, and the studio's priority has consistently been density and fidelity over frame rate. Wait for Rockstar's own spec details before buying hardware on the strength of any of this.
